MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court granted bail on Thursday(21st Nov) to consultant Chetan Patil, who had been arrested in connection with the collapse of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue at Rajkot Fort in Malvan in August.
The 35-foot statue of the Maratha warrior king fell in Sindhudurg district on August 26, nearly nine months after being unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Navy Day. Patil was arrested on August 30 in Kolhapur.
A single bench of Justice A.S. Kilor ruled that there was no evidence to link Patil to the incident, as he was not the structural designer of the statue. The court noted that Patil had only submitted a report on the structural stability of the pedestal, which remained intact even after the statue collapsed.
Another accused, Jaydeep Apte, the sculptor and contractor, was also arrested. The court is set to hear his bail plea on November 25. The Sindhudurg police had filed an FIR under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for negligence and other charges against both Patil and Apte. Patil and Apte had previously sought bail after their pleas were rejected by the sessions court.
