NEW DELHI: Today (19th July): The Central Government has officially appointed Justices Girish Kathpalia, Manoj Jain, and Dharmesh Sharma as permanent judges of the Delhi High Court.

Arjum Ram Meghwal, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, announced the news on X.

According to the Memorandum of Procedure, Supreme Court judges familiar with the Delhi High Court’s affairs were consulted to determine the suitability of the additional judges for permanent appointments.

The Committee of the Supreme Court, formed by the Chief Justice of India under the October 26, 2017 resolution of the Supreme Court Collegium, reviewed the judgments of the additional judges. The evaluations rated the quality of their judgments as ‘Good.’

These judges were initially appointed as additional judges in May 2023. On July 9, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended their elevation to permanent positions.

The Collegium also reviewed all relevant materials, including observations from the Department of Justice. After thorough consideration, the Collegium concluded that Justices Girish Kathpalia, Manoj Jain, and Dharmesh Sharma are well-suited for permanent appointments.

Therefore, the Collegium has resolved to recommend the appointment of Justices Kathpalia, Jain, and Sharma as permanent judges of the Delhi High Court to fill existing vacancies.

The Collegium’s resolution noted that the Delhi High Court’s collegium had unanimously recommended the appointment of these judges as permanent on March 12.

With this appointment, the Delhi High Court will have 37 permanent judges, out of a sanctioned strength of 45.
