KOLKATA: Today(on 25th April), The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a formal inquiry into a series of alleged criminal activities in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. This investigation targets five individuals and several unidentified parties, focusing on accusations of land grabs and sexual assaults against women.
The commencement of this probe was confirmed by agency sources who stated-
“An FIR has been filed against five individuals, with an investigation underway.”
This statement underlines the seriousness with which the authorities are approaching the allegations.
The Calcutta High Court’s intervention came after mounting concerns about law and order in the region, characterized by reports of unauthorized land acquisitions and violent crimes against women. The court has ordered a thorough, monitored investigation by the CBI into these claims, emphasizing the urgency of addressing these grave issues.
Sandeshkhali, located in the North 24 Parganas district, has been a hotspot for unrest, with local women previously protesting against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and a local strongman named Shahjahan. These women accused Shahjahan and his associates of egregious violations, including land grabs and coercive sexual assaults. Their public outcry highlighted the pervasive fear and injustice experienced by the community.
The legal proceedings against Shahjahan have already begun, with the Basirhat court transferring him into CBI custody. Following his court appearance, Shahjahan was visibly distraught, a moment captured in a widely circulated video posted by BJP leader Amit Malviya.

Malviya commented on the situation, saying-
“The once bold presence has vanished. Mamata Banerjee’s once-prominent ally, convicted rapist Sheikh Shahjahan, now weeps in despair. Anubroto Mondal, a criminal, languishes in jail. This serves as a warning to figures like Saokat Mollah and Jehangir Khan, who have spread fear in Bengal. When the law catches up, there will be no saviors, not even Mamata Banerjee, who couldn’t protect her own ministers. Time is running out.”
As the CBI continues its investigation, the agency is expected to delve deeper into the complex network of allegations and uncover further evidence that could lead to more arrests and prosecutions. This case is significant not only for its potential to restore justice to the victims but also for its implications on political accountability and law enforcement in West Bengal.
