On February 23rd, the Calcutta High Court will decide on Bhadra’s bail request after hearings related to a teacher recruitment scandal. Bhadra’s release depends on the court’s decision.

Kolkata: On February 23, the Calcutta High Court concluded the proceedings on Tuesday regarding the bail plea of Sujay Krishna Bhadra, a key figure in the teacher recruitment scandal, as reported by Subrata Chattoraj. Justice Tirthankar Ghosh is scheduled to deliver the verdict.

During the hearing, Phiroze Edulji, representing the Enforcement Directorate (ED), contested the petition, highlighting Bhadra’s extended stay at SSKM Hospital. In response, Jishnu Saha, Bhadra’s legal counsel, emphasized his client’s recent heart surgery, elevated sugar levels, and underlying health conditions.

Saha emphasized the inadequacy of medical care available in prison facilities for Bhadra’s condition and urged the court to consider house arrest as a viable alternative.

In May 2023, a special court in Kolkata rejected Bhadra’s bail petition. Bhadra’s counsel, Kishore Datta, cited his wife’s death as a reason for the bail plea. In his bail petition, Bhadra stated that he was informed of his wife’s death at 12.30pm on Tuesday. He also said that he had submitted to the trial court earlier that his wife was seriously ill and was bed-ridden for long.
