Calcutta High Court | State's Legal Action in "Khalistani" Controversial Remark on Shuvendu Adhikari
Calcutta High Court

KOLKATA: On 26th February, The state is gearing up to file a complaint against an ‘anonymous’ figure, prompting state advocate Amitesh Banerjee to approach Calcutta High Court Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam. The lawyer, however, did not disclose the identity of the individual or the specific case prompting the complaint. Amidst the secrecy, speculations are rife that the state might be aiming to file a complaint against Leader of Opposition, Subvendu Adhikari. Banerjee’s application to the court seeks permission to file a complaint against the yet-to-be-identified person, implying a connection to Shuvendu.

The ambiguity extends to the incident that might be the basis for the state’s intended complaint. Recently, Shuvendu faced allegations of referring to a policeman as ‘Khalistani.‘ Addressing this issue, State Police ADG Supratim Sarkar asserted that legal action would be taken. The ruling party, Trinamool, has also taken steps against Shuvendu. In response, the opposition leader challenged-

“Within 24 hours, it should be proved which BJP leader made Khalistani’s comments. Otherwise, I will take legal action.”

During Monday’s proceedings in the High Court, the state’s lawyer informed that Justice Jai Sengupta, who usually handles related cases, is currently on the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench. Urging a speedy hearing, the Chief Justice assured that the case will be heard on Tuesday through virtual mode, notifying Justice Joy Sengupta. Justice Joy Sengupta often presides over cases involving police over-action and inaction, leading to speculation whether the state’s potential action against Shuvendu is linked to the ‘Khalistani’ remark.
