KOLKATA: On Monday,Suryanil Das, the legal counsel representing Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, has lodged a complaint of harassment against the Kolkata Police. The complaint, filed with a single-judge Bench of the Calcutta High Court, alleges unwarranted harassment by the city police.
The incident unfolded on Monday when Das received a notice from the Kolkata Police, instructing him to appear at the headquarters of the city police at Lalbazar in central Kolkata on February 21 for questioning. Responding promptly to the notice, Das approached the single-judge Bench, presided over by Justice Kausik Chanda, to register his complaint regarding the “unnecessary harassment” faced by him and his client, Suvendu Adhikari.
According to Das, the harassment began after he filed a petition at the Calcutta High Court on behalf of the LoP, addressing a matter related to the turmoil in Sandeshkhali, located in the North 24 Parganas District of West Bengal. The latest episode of alleged harassment is the notice issued on Monday by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of the Kolkata Police.
Das, in his plea before the court, highlighted that the notice lacked clarity on the specific sections under which it was issued, raising concerns about the transparency and legality of the police’s actions. The counsel’s contention suggests a possible attempt to suppress the legal process and obstruct the representation of Suvendu Adhikari in the Sandeshkhali case.
The Calcutta High Court has accepted the petition, and the case is scheduled for a hearing on Tuesday, allowing for a thorough examination of the allegations put forth by Suryanil Das. This development adds to the growing legal challenges faced by Suvendu Adhikari and his legal team, who have been actively pursuing justice in the Sandeshkhali matter.
As this situation unfolds, it brings to the forefront questions about the role of law enforcement and the need for a transparent and fair legal process. The legal battle between Suvendu Adhikari and the Kolkata Police continues to intensify, with each side presenting its arguments and seeking justice through the appropriate legal channels.
In the words of Suryanil Das-
“Since I filed the petition at the Calcutta High Court on behalf of the LoP, I have been facing police harassment.”
This statement underscores the gravity of the situation and raises concerns about the potential misuse of power to stifle legitimate legal actions.
The absence of specific sections in the notice, as pointed out by Das, further deepens the ambiguity surrounding the police’s actions. The court’s intervention and acceptance of the complaint indicate a willingness to probe into the matter and ensure that justice is served without any undue influence.
The Calcutta High Court hearing on Tuesday is crucial for unveiling details and implications in Suvendu Adhikari’s harassment case.
