Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay Announces Intention to Resign on Tuesday

Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court has announced his decision to resign from his judicial position on Tuesday. Known for his assertive rulings on various education-related issues in the state, Justice Gangopadhyay’s impending resignation has fueled speculation about his future political endeavors, particularly his potential association with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Justice Gangopadhyay’s tenure at the Calcutta High Court has been marked by his relentless pursuit of justice in cases involving corruption within the education sector. His investigations have led to significant discoveries and the subsequent legal actions against numerous individuals involved in these corrupt practices.

“For the last two or more years, I have been dealing with some matters, especially education matters, regarding which a huge corruption has been discovered and unearthed,”

Justice Gangopadhyay remarked, highlighting the impact of his judicial interventions.

“A large number of important people in the education sector of this government are now languishing in jail or are under trial. Thereafter, I am now taking up labour matters. There are also large scams by employers in respect of provident fund gratuity. I have also passed certain orders in those respects. But what I have failed while doing these matters of labour matters, labour legislation, is that I have felt that my job in this duty, my job is over,”

he said further.

The justice’s decision to step down is driven by a desire to serve the broader populace beyond the confines of the courtroom.

“I am resigning from the post of a judge in the Calcutta High Court… This is the call of my conscience. Now, I should go to the larger people and larger area. In court, a judge deals with the matters which come before him if a person files a case. But in our country and also in our state, West Bengal, there are a large number of very helpless people,”

he stated, expressing his intention to engage with the community on a more significant scale. Justice Gangopadhyay believes that entering the political arena could provide him with a better platform to address the grievances of the underprivileged and to implement more substantial changes in society.

Amidst rumors of his political affiliation, Justice Gangopadhyay has maintained that his decision regarding which party to join will be made after his resignation. His name has been linked with the BJP, particularly as a potential candidate for the Tamluk parliamentary constituency, a region previously represented by notable political figures such as Suvendu Adhikari and his brother Suvendu Adhikari.

Justice Gangopadhyay’s legal career and his transition into politics are closely watched by both his supporters and critics. His actions and decisions, both as a judge and potentially as a politician, are expected to have a lasting impact on the legal and political landscape of West Bengal.

The justice plans to formally submit his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, and Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. Following his resignation, he has announced that he will address the media and the public, providing further details on his future plans and his reflections on his judicial tenure.

Justice Gangopadhyay’s journey from the judiciary to the political realm underscores the intricate relationship between law, governance, and public service. As the state of West Bengal and the rest of the country await his next steps, the legacy of his judicial work and his future contributions to public life remain subjects of keen interest and speculation.
