KOLKATA: Today (22nd July): The Calcutta High Court Bar Association resolved to abstain from all judicial proceedings following an incident where a lawyer was assaulted by police personnel.

During an urgent general body meeting on July 22, the Association passed a resolution stating that

“Members of the Bar resolve that they will not participate in judicial proceedings before this Hon’ble Court until the delinquent police officer is immediately suspended and appropriate measures are taken against the police personnel responsible for manhandling the advocate.”

According to the Association, Advocate Sourav Mandal was “mercilessly” assaulted by sub-inspector Sudipto Sanyal when he appeared at the Nepalganj police outpost on July 21 on behalf of a client. The sub-inspector also allegedly threatened to charge Mandal under Section 292 (public nuisance) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and frame him in narcotic cases.

Mandal, a member of the High Court Bar Association, has lodged a complaint with higher police officials, attached relevant medical documents, and requested the preservation of CCTV footage from the Nepalganj police outpost.

Based on these documents, the Association urged its members to boycott court proceedings until the police officer is suspended.
