The Calcutta High Court has admitted the CBI’s appeal against the life sentence given to Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case, while rejecting a separate appeal from the West Bengal government. Both parties had sought capital punishment for Roy, who committed the heinous crime in August 2023, provoking nationwide outrage.

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Friday admitted the CBI’s appeal challenging the life imprisonment awarded to Sanjay Roy, the convict in the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case.
A division bench of Justices Debangsu Basak and Md Sabbar Rashidi ruled that since the CBI conducted the investigation, its appeal for harsher punishment will be heard. However, the bench rejected the West Bengal government’s separate appeal challenging the sentence.
Both the CBI and the state government had sought capital punishment for Roy, who was convicted for raping and murdering an on-duty medic inside the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year. The brutal crime had sparked nationwide outrage.
Timeline of Events
- August 10, 2023: Roy was arrested by Kolkata Police.
- Later, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI.
- October 7, 2023: The CBI filed a charge sheet before the trial court.
- November 4, 2023: Charges were formally framed against Roy.
- January 20, 2024: The trial court sentenced Roy to life imprisonment till the end of his natural life.

Following the sentencing, both the CBI and the West Bengal government appealed separately to the Calcutta High Court, arguing that Roy deserved the death penalty.
The division bench reserved its order on January 27 regarding the admission of the appeals and will proceed with hearing the CBI’s case.
