Kolkata: A incident at the Calcutta High Court, in which a group of lawyers forced their way into Courtroom No. 8 of the Registrar General’s office to hold a political meeting, has raised serious questions about the safety and sacredness of courtrooms. Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam strongly criticized to emphasize the importance of keeping judicial spaces honest and fair.

The egregiousness of the lawyers’ actions, particularly their intimidation of office staff and disruption of court proceedings, is emphasized by the Chief Justice’s strong condemnation of them. His thought of carrying out upgraded safety efforts, for example, possibly getting courts late night, mirrors a proactive position pointed toward deflecting future events of comparative unsettling influences.

Chief Justice Sivagnanam articulated that:

“This behavior is unacceptable. The courtroom holds many important documents. How can a member of the bar threaten staff members? They facilitated the court session, and the meeting proceeded as planned. Just two days ago, a group of 40 lawyers caused fear among the staff. This cannot be tolerated. We must uphold the sanctity of the court. If you need to hold meetings, do so elsewhere.”

Reflecting on the severity of the situation, the Chief Justice considered implementing stricter security protocols, such as locking courtrooms after business hours.

The Chief Justice conveyed his disappointment with the disrespectful behavior exhibited by members of the legal community, particularly following his courteous and respectful reception of them:

“The assistant secretary is an elected official. I welcomed them all into my chambers and treated them with respect. Yet, this is the response they give?”

Chief Justice Sivagnanam has entrusted Additional Solicitor General Ashoke Kr Chakrabarti with conducting a comprehensive investigation in response to these incidents.
