The Calcutta High Court has ordered the CBI to submit a report on former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh’s request to liquidate his fixed deposit for family expenses. Arrested over alleged financial irregularities and evidence tampering, Ghosh must add the CBI as a party in his plea. The court’s decision awaits the CBI report on October 30.

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has directed the CBI to file a report regarding a petition by Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, seeking permission to liquidate his fixed deposit to support his family.

Justice Subhendu Samanta ordered Ghosh to include the CBI as a party respondent in his plea to the State Bank of India, which currently refuses to release funds due to an ongoing investigation. Ghosh was arrested on September 2 in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the hospital and accusations of tampering with evidence in a separate rape and murder investigation of an on-duty junior doctor.

Ghosh’s lawyer argued that his wife approached the bank to access the funds, which were urgently needed for the family, as the original fixed deposit documents remain with Ghosh and were not seized. However, the bank’s representative maintained that no transactions could occur due to the CBI’s ongoing investigation.

Justice Samanta noted that CBI’s involvement in both cases made it necessary for the agency to be included in the matter before passing any orders. The Court has ordered the CBI to submit a report by October 30, providing crucial information that will impact the decision on Ghosh’s financial plea. This decision underscores the Court’s efforts to balance family financial needs with legal and investigatory protocol in cases involving alleged criminal activities.
