In response to disturbing reports of medical neglect at Pune’s Yerwada prison, the Bombay High Court has taken action by summoning key officials. Justices SV Kotwal and SG Dige expressed deep concern about the failure to follow court orders regarding a prisoner’s biopsy, emphasizing the urgent need for corrective measures.

Background

Suhas Jagtap, a prisoner seeking bail due to a severe ailment requiring a biopsy. Despite court directives to conduct medical examinations and initiate treatment, the Chief Medical Officer’s report revealed a lack of follow-up on Jagtap’s health status. The unavailability of police escorts for further investigation since January 5, 2024, has exacerbated the situation.

“We have to see what is happening in Pune Yerwada Central Prison in such cases,” and summoned the Superintendent, emphasising the seriousness of the matter. The court remarked, “If this is the attitude of the authorities in dealing with the health issues of the prisoners, then serious action and corrective measures will have to be taken urgently.”
