BJP Mayiladuthurai District President Denied Bail by Madras HC | Extortion Case

Chennai: The Madras High Court denied bail to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) district President of Mayiladuthurai, K. Agoram, in connection with a case involving allegations of attempting to extort money from Dharmapuram Adheenam Sri Masilamani Swamy. This decision comes amidst serious accusations that Agoram, along with six others, engaged in a scheme to blackmail Masilamani Swamy by threatening to release obscene videos and audio recordings related to the Mutt.

Justice T.V. Thamilselvi, presiding as a single bench judge over the Madras High Court, rejected the bail application after being informed by the prosecution of Agoram’s involvement in over 40 criminal cases, alongside the opening of a history sheet against him. The court was also apprised of the fact that several co-accused individuals are currently evading capture, raising concerns that granting bail might result in the tampering of crucial evidence.

The legal proceedings trace back to an arrest made on March 15, 2024, when Agoram was apprehended in Mumbai by a special team from the Tamil Nadu police, following a First Information Report (FIR) filed on February 25, 2024, by the Mayiladuthurai police. This FIR was lodged based on allegations from Viruthagiri, brother to Masilamani Swamy, against Agoram and others, including an advocate named Jayachandran from Seiyur, and Kodiyarasu, an educationist.

According to Viruthagiri’s complaint, the accused, specifically mentioning Vinoth from Aduthurai and Senthil, who were associated with the Mutt, threatened him with the release of the obscene material unless a demanded sum of money was paid. This extortion attempt was allegedly made on behalf of Agoram, aiming to exploit the reputation of the Mutt through threats of making the scandalous content public via television and social media platforms.

In light of these allegations, the police charged Agoram and his associates under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 389 (putting a person in fear of injury to commit extortion), 506 part II (criminal intimidation), and 120B (criminal conspiracy), underscoring the serious nature of the charges and the potential impact on the community and the victims involved.
