BIT Mesra Student Molested & Slashed With Blade: Jharkhand High Court Takes Suo Motu Cognisance

RANCHI: The Jharkhand High Court on Friday took suo motu cognisance of the assault of a female student of the Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra. The matter was highlighted in the media, prompting urgent judicial attention.

A division bench led by Chief Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan and Justice Rajesh Shankar took note of the case and has scheduled the next hearing for August 28.

The Incident

The incident occurred on August 20, when an MBA student of BIT Mesra allegedly faced harassment outside the campus. Reports state that a group of miscreants accosted her at night. When she protested, she was attacked with a blade, leaving her injured.

Officials confirmed that the student was immediately rushed to a nearby nursing home for treatment. She continues to undergo medical care.

Student Protests at BIT Mesra

The incident has triggered student outrage across the campus. Since Thursday, students have been staging protests demanding better security measures, both within and outside the BIT Mesra premises.

This is not the first time campus security at BIT Mesra has come under judicial scrutiny. Recently, Justice Sanjay Prasad (in the case of Mausam Kumar Singh & Ors v State of Jharkhand & Ors), in connection with a previous case involving the murder of a student, had observed that the campus lacked adequate safety measures. The court had then imposed a Rs 20 lakh fine to be paid to the kin of the murdered student.
