The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia’s bail plea in the Rs 540 crore disproportionate assets case. Majithia remains in custody as the detailed order is awaited.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday dismissed the bail request of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case registered by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau on June 25.

The case accuses him of laundering ₹540 crore of drug money. The order was passed by Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya on a petition that Majithia had filed on September 17, and the detailed judgment is yet to be released.

Majithia was arrested on June 25 and has been in judicial custody since then. He has been saying that the case is politically driven and that “multiple cases have been filed to keep him behind bars,” as stated in his plea.

The Vigilance Bureau filed a massive 40,000-page chargesheet against him in the Mohali court on August 22 and strongly opposed his bail.

According to the Bureau, if Majithia is allowed to leave jail on bail, “he might influence witnesses,” making the investigation more difficult.

This disproportionate assets case began after a Punjab Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) looked into a 2021 drug case that had been registered against Majithia.

In 2021, he was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act after a 2018 report by the state’s anti-drug special task force.

Majithia had already spent over five months in Patiala jail in the earlier drug case and was released in August 2022 after the High Court granted him bail at that time. The investigation in the 2021 case is still going on.

The court’s latest decision means Majithia will continue to remain in custody as the vigilance case progresses, and the detailed order is awaited to understand the full reasoning behind the rejection of his bail plea.
