Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to explain why it has not responded to a political party’s request for a symbol to contest in the upcoming Bihar assembly elections.
The party, Akhil Bharatiya Jan Sangh, had earlier sent a request to the ECI on June 2 under the rules of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order. They even followed up with a reminder on July 4, but got no reply.
Because of the lack of response, the party decided to approach the Delhi High Court.
Justice Mini Pushkarna, who heard the case, has now issued a notice to the ECI and asked for its reply. The matter will be heard again on August 19.
Akhil Bharatiya Jan Sangh is a political party that was registered in 1989, but it is still an unrecognised party. The party says it has its roots in the earlier Bhartiya Jan Sangh, and believes it has full legal and constitutional rights to take part in elections.
According to the petition, if the ECI does not give them a common party symbol, they will lose the fair chance to compete in the Bihar elections. The party has made it clear that denying them a symbol will directly affect their participation.
- Advocate Pranay Ranjan appeared on behalf of the Akhil Bharatiya Jan Sangh.
- Advocate Rohini Prasad accepted the notice on behalf of the Election Commission.
