Today, On 6th December, The Calcutta High Court granted bail to Sujay Krishna Bhadra, an accused in the Bengal school recruitment scam. The bail was approved in a case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). A single-judge bench issued the order, imposing multiple conditions to regulate his release. These restrictions aim to ensure compliance and prevent interference with the investigation.

A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court granted bail to Sujay Krishna Bhadra, the main accused in the cash-for-school job case in West Bengal, which is being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), conducting a parallel inquiry into the same case, attempted to present Bhadra as arrested. However, this could not happen at a special court in Kolkata due to his medical condition.

While granting bail, Justice Ghosh imposed several conditions on Bhadra. He must not attempt to tamper with evidence or influence witnesses related to the school job case.

Additionally, Bhadra is required to surrender his passport to the investigative agency and is prohibited from leaving West Bengal without court approval.

Bhadra was arrested by the ED last year and has since been held in judicial custody at the Presidency Central Correctional Home in South Kolkata. Recently, the CBI filed a petition to present him as arrested, but the special court judge noted that this could only occur if he was physically present in court.

However, the CBI could not achieve this, as the correctional home authorities reported that Bhadra’s medical condition prevented him from attending the court. Another hearing on the matter is scheduled for Friday, where it remains to be seen if the CBI will be able to present him.

Sujay Krishna Bhadra, popularly known as “Kalighat-er Kaku” (Uncle from Kalighat), is a 61-year-old businessman based in Kolkata, West Bengal. He has become widely known for his alleged role in the West Bengal school recruitment scandal, where he is accused of facilitating illegal job placements in state-run and aided schools for a fee.

Investigations indicate that Bhadra served as an intermediary, relaying candidate information to influential individuals to secure these jobs unlawfully. His close ties to prominent Trinamool Congress leaders, including MP Abhishek Banerjee, have significantly heightened the attention surrounding this case.
