The Bangladesh High Court has instructed the government to justify why Chinmoy Krishna Das, facing sedition charges for allegedly insulting the national flag, should not be granted bail. His lawyer reported that the court seeks a response within two weeks, with a potential hearing next week, as Das remains in custody amid heightened security.

Dhaka [Bangladesh]: The Bangladesh High Court on Tuesday directed the government to explain why Chinmoy Krishna Das should not be granted bail, his lawyer confirmed.
Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmmachari, the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatani Jagran Jote, is facing sedition charges for allegedly insulting the national flag of Bangladesh. He had applied for bail in the High Court after a lower court in Chittagong rejected his plea on January 2.
“Bangladesh High Court has asked the government to respond to the ruling within two weeks,”
said Apurba Kumar Bhattachariya, Das’ lawyer.
Das was arrested on November 25 at Dhaka airport. After his bail was denied by the Chittagong court, his legal team moved to the High Court on January 12. Bhattachariya stated that the hearing would follow the order of pending cases and might be scheduled for next week, as the High Court hears cases only on Sundays and Mondays.
“The court will hear the case according to the serial of the pending cases. We hope the hearing will be held next week,”
Bhattachariya added.
During the January 2 hearing in Chittagong, Das’ defence team argued that he held deep respect for his country, comparable to the reverence for his own mother, and was not a traitor. However, the court led by Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Saiful Islam denied bail after hearing both parties’ arguments.
“We mentioned to the court that the priest respects the motherland like his mother and is not a traitor,”

Bhattachariya stated.
The hearing took place under heightened security, with Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Advocate Mofizur Haque Bhuiyan representing the prosecution.
Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former ISKCON leader, remains in custody as legal proceedings continue. The case has gained significant public attention, with many closely monitoring the developments in the Bangladesh High Court.
Das’ legal team remains hopeful for a favourable ruling, which will determine the next course of legal action in the case.
