A Vacation Bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and Sandeep Mehta reinstated the statutory bail previously granted to Khurana.

NEW DELHI: Today (7th June): The Supreme Court criticized the Delhi High Court for extending the stay on a local court’s order granting default bail to Parvinder Singh Khurana, an accused in a money-laundering case.

A Vacation Bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and Sandeep Mehta reinstated the statutory bail previously granted to Khurana.

“This concerns liberty; how can bail be stayed for over a year?” Justice Mehta remarked during today’s hearing.

The Bench was addressing appeals against the Delhi High Court orders that initially stayed the bail in June 2023 and later adjourned the matter in May 2024 for a hearing in July.

The Rouse Avenue Court granted Khurana bail on June 17 last year in relation to a cryptocurrency scam. However, Justice Amit Mahajan of the Delhi High Court stayed this decision following an appeal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

On May 22 this year, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma scheduled the next hearing for July 9, following Justice Mahajan’s recusal from the case on March 18.

The appeal was filed by advocate Madhusmita Bora, with advocate Zoheb Hossain representing the ED.
