Rajasthan: Godman Asaram Bapu, on tuesday (13th Aug) who was convicted and is serving a life sentence in a rape case, has been granted a seven-day parole by the Rajasthan High Court for medical treatment. The 85-year-old godman will travel to Maharashtra for the treatment under police custody.

Last year, the godman was also convicted by a trial court in Gujarat for raping a woman disciple on multiple occasions at his Surat ashram in 2013.

“The granting of parole to Asaram Bapu raises concerns about the fairness and consistency of the criminal justice system,” said legal expert Priya Sharma. “It sends a message that the wealthy and influential can circumvent the law, which undermines public trust in the system.”
In March, the Supreme Court had declined to interfere in a plea filed by Asaram Bapu challenging the Rajasthan High Court’s decision to reject his request for the suspension of his sentence on medical grounds. However, the top court stated that the godman could approach the High Court seeking permission for medical treatment.
Earlier, Rajasthan High Court called for a medical report concerning the ayurvedic treatment pursued by the imprisoned self-styled spiritual leader, Asaram Bapu. During a legal proceeding, Asaram put forth a petition requesting authorization for ayurvedic therapy at Madhavbaug Hospital, located in Pune, Maharashtra.
This led to Justices Vinit Mathur and Dinesh Mehta, presiding over the division bench, to mandate the provision of comprehensive details regarding the proposed treatment and its duration.
