KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court on Monday(11th Nov) declined to consider a bail plea from Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, related to a multi-crore financial irregularities case.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, presiding over a single-judge bench, directed that the bail application should be presented to the lower court handling the case.
Currently, the financial irregularities at RG Kar are being examined by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Kolkata, with both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducting parallel investigations. The CBI’s investigation is court-directed, while the ED initiated its probe independently by filing an enforcement case information report (ECIR).
In addition to the financial case, CBI is also investigating Ghosh in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar in August this year.
The charges in the financial irregularities case include alleged manipulation of the tendering process to favor certain contractors, bypassing the state Public Works Department to conduct hospital infrastructure work through private agencies for commissions, and the unauthorized sale of bio-medical waste and organs from unidentified bodies arriving at the hospital morgue. Alongside Ghosh, four others, including his associate Ashish Pandey, are in judicial custody. Investigators have evidence suggesting Pandey played a central role in the money trail of the alleged scam.
On November 2, the Sealdah Court in West Bengal formally charged Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case. Proceedings will be expedited on a fast-track, day-to-day basis. Roy, the main accused, denied the allegations, stating in court, “I am innocent. I have been framed in this rape-murder case. No one is listening to me. The government is threatening me to stay silent.”
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had previously filed a charge-sheet identifying Roy as the “sole prime accused,” hinting at a “larger conspiracy” behind the crime.
Meanwhile, junior doctors have demanded severe action, including capital punishment for all involved, with Dr. Rajdeep, a junior doctor, stating, “We want the CBI to act strictly and ensure capital punishment for all responsible.”
Earlier, on October 22, protesting junior doctors ended their hunger strike after a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna.
On November 3, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari met the victim’s parents, expressing support and stating,
“The BJP stands with this family. Our fight for justice continues, aiming to hold accountable those who destroyed evidence and to seek action against the state government, which shares responsibility.”
