The High Court Bar Association, Allahabad, had earlier requested the Chief Justice to declare holidays due to the huge crowd of devotees attending the Maha Kumbh Mela and the resulting traffic restrictions in the city. The Chief Justice had already declared January 29 as a holiday for the principal bench of the High Court.
The High Court Bar Association, citing the difficulties faced by lawyers and litigants in reaching the court amidst traffic disruptions, demanded a holiday for two days before and one day after the Mauni Amavasya festival (January 27 to 30). A proposal to this effect was passed by the association.
The court resumed on Monday, January 27, but due to ongoing transportation challenges, a proposal was also made to ensure “no adverse orders” were passed under these circumstances. Later in the evening, Registrar General Rajiv Bharti issued a notification confirming the holiday.
The photo center run by the High Court Bar Association will also be closed on January 28, 29, and 30. Sharing this update, the press secretary of the association, Puneet Shukla, said, “The photo center will remain closed for three days due to the declared holidays.”
The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), Prayagraj Bench, has also declared holidays from January 28 to 30 in view of the crowd expected during Mauni Amavasya. According to Deputy Registrar Kanchan Sharma’s notification from the Principal Bench, the CAT will have working days on April 5, April 26, and May 3 to make up for these holidays.

Maha Kumbh Mela:
The world’s largest spiritual and cultural event, Maha Kumbh, commenced today in Prayagraj with the Amrit Snan on Paush Poornima. Millions of devotees, pilgrims, and visitors are participating in the holy dip at various ghats of the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers converge. The grand event will continue until Mahashivaratri on February 26. This year’s Maha Kumbh is especially significant due to a rare celestial alignment that occurs only once every 144 years. Yesterday, nearly 50 lakh devotees took a dip at the Triveni Sangam.
Mauni Amavasya is one of the most auspicious days in the Maha Kumbh Mela, attracting millions of devotees from across the country. Such a large crowd often causes traffic congestion and logistical issues in Prayagraj. To address these challenges, the courts and bar associations have taken steps to ensure smooth functioning without causing inconvenience to litigants and lawyers.
