The Allahabad High Court has granted bail to former Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki in an arson case but denied his request to stay his conviction. Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court on Thursday granted bail to former Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki in a case related to arson but rejected his request to stay his conviction. Solanki was convicted of setting a woman’s house on fire in the Jajmau area, a case that has garnered considerable attention due to his political standing.
The ruling, delivered by a bench of Justices Rajiv Gupta and Surendra Singh, also saw the state government’s appeal for a harsher sentence dismissed, affirming the original sentence handed down by the special court in Kanpur on June 7, 2024.
Solanki, along with four others, was sentenced by the Kanpur court for their role in the 2022 arson incident. Despite his bail, the denial of a stay on conviction carries significant implications for Solanki’s political future, as a criminal conviction can affect his eligibility to run for public office.
This case underscores the judiciary’s focus on upholding the law, balancing both bail rights and accountability. With his conviction intact, Solanki’s legal battles may not yet be over as he contemplates further appeals.
