Today, On 27th November, The Kerala High Court sought the State’s response to a plea requesting a CBI investigation into the death of ADM Naveen Babu. Babu’s widow argued in court that accused PP Divya might be using political influence and fabricating evidence to derail a fair probe. The case raises concerns about the impartiality of the current investigation.

The Kerala High Court requested the State’s response to a plea from the widow of late Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Naveen Babu, who is seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into his death, which involves allegations against former Kannur District Panchayat President PP Divya.

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas also issued a notice to the CBI regarding this matter.

During the proceedings, the petitioner’s counsel, advocate John S. Ralph, raised concerns that PP Divya might be using her political influence to obstruct a fair investigation and possibly fabricate evidence. In response, Justice Thomas decided to request the case diary from the investigation.

The court instructed the Investigating Officer (IO) to submit a statement addressing the petition by December 6, but it declined to issue any interim orders preventing the IO from filing the final report at this time.

Naveen Babu found dead in his official quarters on October 15, shortly after a farewell ceremony held due to his transfer to another district. At this event, PP Divya made public allegations of corruption against him. She has since been charged with abetting his suicide but was granted anticipatory bail by a Sessions Court on November 8.

In her petition, Babu’s widow expressed serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding her husband’s death, claiming that Divya had intruded into the farewell event with a cameraman, made defamatory remarks, and circulated recordings of her speech.

The petition also suggests that the District Collector of Kannur may have been improperly influenced by Divya to avoid legal repercussions.

It criticized the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for not conducting a thorough investigation and noted that the widow had requested the preservation of key evidence, including CCTV footage, phone logs, and recordings related to the case.

Moreover, the plea highlights that witnesses are fearful of testifying against Divya due to her significant political connections. The inquest into Babu’s death was reportedly conducted hastily, before his close family members could arrive at the scene.

The High Court will next review the case on December 6.

Advocates involved for the petitioner include John S. Ralph, Vishnu Chandran, and several others.
