Consequently, Justices Bharati Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande dismissed the case on August 1. Serving a life sentence, Salem initially approached the Bombay High Court to prevent his transfer from Taloja Jail, citing threats to his life.
After the sessions court denied his request on June 25 but ordered a delay until July 3, Taloja prison officials argued that urgent repairs in the high-security section necessitated his transfer.
Salem’s petition claimed the transfer was unwarranted and malicious, proposing instead to move him to another secure area within Taloja. He emphasized his good conduct and past attacks at Taloja, fearing for his safety due to rival gang members in other Maharashtra jails, including Nashik, where recent murders had occurred.
Despite his concerns, Salem moved to Nashik on July 4 and subsequently withdrew his petition.
Advocates Ashwini Achari and Taraq Sayed represented Abu Salem, while Public Prosecutor HS Venegavkar and advocate MM Deshmukh represented the State.

Additionally, withdrawing the plea might be part of a broader legal strategy. It’s possible that his legal team advised him to focus on other legal battles or appeals that might be more critical to his overall situation. By not spreading his resources thin over multiple legal fronts, Salem might be better positioned to concentrate on more significant cases that directly impact his conviction and sentencing.
This development comes in the backdrop of Salem serving a life sentence for his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts and other criminal activities. The high-profile nature of his crimes and subsequent incarceration means that every legal move he makes is closely watched and analyzed. The decision to withdraw the plea, therefore, is not just a simple legal maneuver but a calculated step that could have several underlying reasons and future implications.
