Gangster Abu Salem approached the Bombay High Court, contesting the decision of prison authorities to transfer him from Taloja Central Prison to Nashik Central Prison due to life threats.

Mumbai, Maharashtra: On Tuesday (2nd July): Gangster Abu Salem approached the Bombay High Court, contesting the decision of prison authorities to transfer him from Taloja Central Prison to Nashik Central Prison due to life threats.

Convicted for the 1993 Mumbai blasts and the murder of builder Pradeep Jain, Salem’s request was previously denied by the Mumbai Sessions Court.

Through his lawyer Taraq Sayyed, Salem filed a plea to the Bombay High Court, appealing the Sessions Court’s decision. The Sessions Court had ordered the prison authorities to postpone his transfer until July 3.

Salem’s petition, to be heard by Justices Ajay Gadkari and Neela Gokhale on July 3, argues that his transfer is unjustified and malicious. He noted that he has faced two attacks while at Taloja Central Prison and fears similar threats in another facility.

Salem’s plea also highlighted his ongoing trials in Delhi, which require regular travel. He argued that moving him to another prison could disrupt these travels and delay his trials.

Prison authorities had previously stated that the high-security section of Taloja where Salem is held is in disrepair and needs urgent maintenance, necessitating his transfer. However, Salem contended that he could be relocated within Taloja Central Prison, which has ample space and could accommodate him safely.

The plea also emphasized that other jails in Maharashtra house members of rival gangs, increasing his risk. It cited recent murders in Nashik and Kolhapur prisons despite security measures.

Salem further argued that moving him could complicate his legal battles, including those in Portugal, as his long-term residence at Taloja Central Prison is well-known.
