AAP Govt to Delhi HC: "143 Toilets Built for Transgender Persons, 223 Under Construction"

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government informed the Delhi High Court about significant advancements in infrastructure tailored for transgender individuals, particularly concerning sanitation facilities. According to a status report submitted by the Department of Social Welfare, a total of 396 toilets specifically for transgender persons are in various stages of construction across the national capital.

The report detailed that 143 toilets have been completed, 223 are currently under construction, and plans for an additional 30 are being finalized.

The information was provided during a hearing before a Division Bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora. In addition to the targeted facilities, the government also designated 1,584 existing toilets originally intended for persons with disabilities to be accessible to transgender persons.

This development came in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Jasmine Kaur Chhabra, which urged the government to establish separate toilet facilities for transgender and third-gender individuals.

The PIL argued that the absence of such facilities not only compromises the privacy of transgender people but also exposes them to potential sexual harassment when forced to use male or female washrooms.

Furthermore, the petition highlighted the broader social and health challenges faced by many in the transgender community, including the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and other health issues, exacerbated by a lack of safe and accessible healthcare facilities due to societal stigma and discrimination.
