Justice Kempaiah Somashekar Recommended as Chief Justice of Manipur High Court by Supreme Court Collegium

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Collegium, Justice Kempaiah Somashekar from the Karnataka High Court has been recommended to take over as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court.

This recommendation comes as the present Chief Justice of Manipur High Court, Justice D Krishnakumar, is set to retire on May 21, 2025.

“The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on 15th May, 2025 has recommended appointment of Mr. Justice Kempaiah Somashekar, Judge, High Court of Karnataka, as the Chief Justice of High Court of Manipur, consequent upon the retirement of Mr. Justice D. Krishnakumar on 21st May, 2025,”

Justice Kempaiah Somashekar has had a long and distinguished journey in the legal and judicial field. He started his legal career by enrolling as an advocate on January 27, 1990. He practised mainly in the Mysore and Chamarajanagar districts, dealing with both civil and criminal matters.

On June 17, 1998, Justice Somashekar was directly appointed as a District and Sessions Judge, marking a significant step in his career. Over the years, he served in various important roles within the judicial system. Some of the key posts he held include:

His elevation to the High Court came in 2016. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court on November 14, 2016, and later became a Permanent Judge on November 3, 2018.

With his vast experience in both judicial and administrative roles, Justice Somashekar is now expected to bring valuable leadership to the Manipur High Court. His appointment will help maintain continuity in the High Court’s operations following the retirement of Justice D Krishnakumar.
