New Delhi: Amid the intense heatwave sweeping through Delhi, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has taken compassionate measures to ensure the well-being of animals and birds residing within the Supreme Court premises.
Recognizing the impact of the soaring temperatures, CJI Chandrachud has mandated that adequate food and water supplies be provided for these creatures.
According to sources, several vessels filled with food and water have been strategically placed throughout the campus, catering to the needs of small animals like squirrels and birds.
“The birds and squirrels are suffering due to the heat. This arrangement has made it clear that the Supreme Court takes care of humans as well as other creatures,”
-a senior officer at the Supreme Court said.
CJI Chandrachud is renowned for his attentiveness to the health and welfare of the animals on the premises.
A few days ago, the Chief Justice personally walked the grounds of the Supreme Court to identify suitable locations for placing the food and water containers. He directed workers to ensure a constant and reliable supply at these spots to alleviate the suffering of the animals during the harsh weather.
This initiative is one among many introduced by CJI Chandrachud to improve conditions within the Supreme Court. Amid the ongoing heatwave, he also instructed the authorities to enhance the facilities for journalists who report from the court. This includes ensuring proper seating arrangements and access to drinking water.
Additionally, a facilitation center has been established for visitors, alongside a special help desk dedicated to assisting persons with disabilities. These measures reflect the Chief Justice’s commitment to making the Supreme Court a more inclusive and supportive environment.
In November, CJI Chandrachud inaugurated the ‘Mitti Cafe’ within the Supreme Court premises, accompanied by other judges. This newly built cafe is unique as it is entirely managed by a staff consisting of people with disabilities. The managers of the cafe include individuals who are visually impaired, suffer from cerebral palsy, and are paraplegic.
Through these actions, CJI Chandrachud has demonstrated a holistic approach to leadership, ensuring that the needs of all—humans and animals alike—are met within the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction.
