New Delhi, March 2 – The All India Bar Association (AIBA) has officially approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for strict legal measures against Google for allegedly disseminating false information aimed at defaming the Prime Minister.
In a detailed letter penned by Dr. Adish C Aggarwala, the esteemed Senior Advocate and Chairman of AIBA, Google is accused of violating Indian Penal Code sections 153A, 500, and 505. These sections pertain to promoting enmity between different groups, defamation, and making statements conducive to public mischief, respectively.
Dr. Aggarwala’s letter articulates a grave concern over Google’s Artificial Intelligence platform, Gemini, which reportedly propagated unfounded and damaging content about the Prime Minister. He emphasized,
“The company being the creator of the machine cannot be allowed to escape the consequences of the damage caused by the machine.”
The letter further elaborates on the responsibilities of creators behind AI technologies, stating,
“The manner in which a machine is to learn facts and interpret them is designed by its programmer.”
This statement underscores the accountability that should be held by the developers and the company at large for the outputs generated by their AI systems.

Highlighting the timing of these allegations, with the country on the brink of general elections, the AIBA has expressed concerns over the potential for such misinformation to tarnish the image of political figures and mislead the public. Dr. Aggarwala pointed out,
“The Prime Minister of India has strived to get India its due place under the Sun. But there are people who are not enthused by the rise of the country to prominence and may want to stain its honour by spewing spite.”
The letter concludes with a strong plea to the Prime Minister, urging the invocation of penal laws against those responsible for these “motivated crimes.” The AIBA’s move seeks to safeguard the integrity of India’s democratic processes and the reputation of its leaders against the misuse of advanced technology for spreading falsehoods.
The legal community and the public await the response from the Prime Minister’s Office on this critical issue, as the allegations against Google highlight the broader challenges of regulating AI and digital platforms, ensuring they do not become vehicles for misinformation and harm.
