NEW DELHI: On Saturday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially distanced itself from critical remarks made against the judiciary by its Members of Parliament Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma. Party President J.P. Nadda took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify that these statements reflect the personal opinions of the MPs and do not represent the party’s stance.
“The BJP has nothing to do with the comments of MPs Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma on the judiciary and the Chief Justice. These are personal remarks, and the BJP neither agrees with nor supports them in any manner. We unequivocally reject them,”
Nadda posted.
Earlier in the day, Dubey, a fourth-term MP known for his bold rhetoric in the Lok Sabha, launched a scathing attack on the judiciary. He questioned the role of the Supreme Court in lawmaking, saying,
“If the Supreme Court is going to make the laws, then what’s the point of Parliament and state assemblies? They should just be shut down.”
This is far from the first time that Dubey has sparked controversy with his public statements. Below is a chronological list of some of his most contentious remarks over the years:
1. March 24, 2025 – “Supreme Court should not intervene in certain matters”

Dubey recently accused the apex court of overstepping its jurisdiction. He cited examples like cryptocurrency regulation and online gaming, asserting that such issues fall within the executive domain.
“Despite the RBI clarifying that cryptocurrency is not legal tender, the Supreme Court continues to allow exchanges to operate,” he said.
2. September 25, 2024 – “ISI and China influencing Waqf Bill feedback”
Raising suspicions over the 1.25 crore submissions received by the Parliamentary Committee reviewing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Dubey suggested foreign interference. He urged the Home Ministry to investigate possible involvement of Pakistan’s ISI, China, radical preacher Zakir Naik, and other proxies to manipulate democratic institutions.
3. August 6, 2024 – “Rahul Gandhi is a hermit, has no caste”

While participating in a heated Lok Sabha debate on caste and representation, Dubey controversially claimed that Rahul Gandhi has no caste and referred to him as a
“hermit.”
He argued that Gandhi’s earlier statements invalidated his claims to caste identity and invoked the saying,
“You should not ask about the caste of a hermit.”
4. December 6, 2023 – “No OBC CMs left in Congress”
After electoral setbacks to Congress leaders Ashok Gehlot and Bhupesh Baghel, Dubey claimed
“ the party had no remaining Chief Ministers from the OBC category.”
He questioned the sincerity of the Congress’s stand on social justice and caste-based representation.
5. October 27, 2023 – “Dubai Didi” and ethics case against Mahua Moitra
In an ongoing row over the cash-for-query controversy involving TMC MP Mahua Moitra, Dubey mocked her for accidentally referring to him as “Dubai” in official correspondence. He dubbed her “Dubai Didi” and accused her of compromising national security and parliamentary decorum, using hashtags like “degree wali desh beche” and “chand paise ke le jamir beche” to question her integrity.
6. February 7, 2023 – “Congress also favoured big industrial houses”
In response to Rahul Gandhi’s allegations of crony capitalism against the Modi government, Dubey claimed that the Congress had historically supported industrial giants like the Tatas, Birlas, and Ambanis. He said he could produce documents to support his claims and even offered to resign if proven wrong.

7. March 21, 2022 – “Russia not entirely at fault in Ukraine conflict”
Speaking during Zero Hour, Dubey stated that
“Russia should not be seen as solely responsible for the Ukraine crisis”
He drew historical analogies with India’s relationship with its neighbors and suggested NATO expansionism was partly to blame.
8. July 29, 2021 – “TMC called me ‘Bihari Gunda'”
Dubey accused TMC MP Mahua Moitra of calling him a
“Bihari Gunda,”
framing it as an attack on Hindi-speaking citizens and Bihar’s dignity. He demanded an apology and claimed it showed TMC’s bias against North Indians.
9. 2019 – “GDP is not the Bible, Ramayan or Mahabharat”
In a striking deviation from economic orthodoxy, Dubey downplayed the relevance of GDP during a parliamentary debate. Quoting economist Simon Kuznets, he said GDP should not be treated with reverence and declared,
“Whoever talks about GDP is wrong. GDP has no relevance to this country.” Following backlash, he even advocated for censorship on social media.
10. October 2019 – “Support BJP candidate, even if a thief or criminal”
In a campaign speech in Jharkhand, Dubey urged voters to back the BJP candidate regardless of their background, stating,
“Even if the candidate is disabled, a thief, dacoit or a criminal, we must support them because it’s the party’s decision.”
11. February 8, 2023 – “Rahul Gandhi is a ghost, not a real person“
During a parliamentary session, Dubey sarcastically referred to Rahul Gandhi as a
“ghost,”
saying that the members had just heard from a spirit. This was a jibe at Gandhi’s own philosophical remarks claiming he had “killed” his previous political self.
Nishikant Dubey’s political journey has been marked by his fiery rhetoric and frequent brush-ins with controversy. Despite being a senior and seasoned lawmaker, his statements have often placed the BJP in a position where it has had to clarify or distance itself—such as the current instance involving his criticism of the Supreme Court. While some view Dubey’s outspoken nature as bold, critics argue it borders on recklessness, raising concerns about decorum, institutional respect, and political responsibility.
