NEW DELHI: As Jammu and Kashmir approaches the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, political tensions are once again surfacing. With top-level meetings in Delhi and contrasting statements from regional leaders like Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, uncertainty prevails.

Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah took to the social media platform X on Monday to express his belief that “nothing bad will happen” on the anniversary.

“I’ve heard every possible permutation & combination about what to expect in J&K tomorrow, so let me stick my neck out and say nothing will happen tomorrow — fortunately nothing bad will happen but unfortunately nothing positive will happen either. I’m still optimistic about something positive for J&K in this monsoon session of Parliament but not tomorrow.“

He remarked, striking a tone of cautious optimism. Omar clarified that his assessment wasn’t based on any insider information from Delhi, but purely a “gut feeling.”

He remains hopeful, however, that some positive developments may still emerge during the current parliamentary session.

“Let’s see this time tomorrow,”

he added, capturing the prevailing mood of uncertainty.

In contrast to Omar Abdullah’s calm, former Chief Minister and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti voiced deep concerns. She warned that the central government may be planning actions similar to those taken in August 2019, the day Article 370 was abrogated and J&K lost its statehood.

“I have my apprehensions, you know, something like what they did in 2019. They broke up, dismembered the state, they broke it into parts, you know, dispossessed us. Their main target was Muslims, especially Kashmiris. So, I feel something worse may be in the offing to disempower us further, dismember us,”

On Monday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, and Home Secretary Govind Mohan. These meetings came just a day after both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shah separately met President Droupadi Murmu.

While the official reason for the meetings remains undisclosed, the timing, just before the Article 370 anniversary, has raised speculation. The recent suspension of the annual Amarnath Yatra, citing “urgent maintenance work” due to heavy rains, has also raised concerns.

Prime Minister Modi is expected to address the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting on Tuesday. With the opportunity to nominate candidates for the Vice Presidential elections opening soon, the BJP-led NDA appears to be tightening its strategy. The Vice Presidential election, scheduled before the Monsoon Session concludes on August 21, is likely to go in the NDA’s favor given its majority in the electoral college.

The PM is also expected to push back against the Opposition’s allegations, particularly on contentious issues like the role of the Election Commission and the electoral roll verification drive in Bihar.
