The Allahabad High Court dismissed a PIL seeking restrictions on loudspeakers at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. The petitioners, who claimed noise pollution was disturbing their meditation, failed to provide solid proof. The court called the plea an “academic exercise” without real data and rejected it outright.
The Supreme Court asked Uttar Pradesh (UP) government to propose suitable amendments to the laws governing cooperative societies and other such legal entities to stop conferring ex officio positions on the spouses or family members of the State bureaucrats. The Court directed the government to prepare and place an appropriate draft proposal before it by February 10, 2025.
The Allahabad High Court scrutinized the Enforcement Directorate, Serious Fraud Investigation Office, and Uttar Pradesh’s Economic Offences Wing for their inadequate investigation into the ‘Shine-City’ scam. The Court instructed the agencies to conduct a proper probe, admonishing their lackadaisical approach. The Ministry of External Affairs was asked to provide a detailed affidavit on the status of the extradition of the fugitive accused.

The Allahabad HC Today (April 27th) granted bail to former MP Dhananjay Singh but refused his plea to suspend or stay a 7-year imprisonment sentence passed by a district court in a 2020 kidnapping and extortion case. After the HC order, Singh will be released on bail but he cannot contest the election.
CJI D Y Chandrachud led bench, Today (April 5th) issued an interim stay on the Allahabad HC’s order, which deemed the Uttar Pradesh Board of Madarsa Education Act, 2004, unconstitutional and contrary to secular principles. The Court also sent notices to the Centre, Uttar Pradesh government, and other concerned parties regarding the petitions challenging the high court’s ruling.
The Allahabad High Court has urged the Union government to consider forming an international treaty to address challenges in prosecuting foreign nationals, particularly regarding bail, interpreters, and consular support. The court emphasized the need for fair treatment and the prevention of exploitation of legal gaps. The case will resume on April 18.

The Supreme Court Today disposed of a plea challenging the Allahabad High Court’s order on Mathura’s Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah Masjid dispute. It allowed the Shahi Masjid Idgah to pursue a recall application. The Supreme Court also upheld the interim stay on the implementation of the high court’s order for a court-monitored survey of the Shahi Idgah Mosque complex.
