The Supreme Court ruled that an adopted child cannot contest transactions made by a Hindu widow before adoption. It affirmed the widow’s ownership rights under the Hindu Succession Act, validating a 2007 sale deed while voiding a 2008 gift deed due to improper execution. The court emphasized that an adopted child cannot divest prior estates.
Today, On 3rd December, the Supreme Court imposed a Rs. 50,000 cost on the Central Government for appealing a widow’s pension rights following her soldier husband’s death. The court criticized the appeal as frivolous and detrimental, emphasizing the need for compassion towards armed forces families. The widow’s pension rights were upheld, reinforcing social justice.
The Supreme Court criticized the Patna High Court’s comments about a widow and make-up articles in a 1985 murder case, calling them “highly objectionable.” The Supreme Court stated that the remarks lacked sensitivity and evidence, highlighting that no definitive proof linked the victim to the house or supported motive for the crime. All seven accused were acquitted.
The National Commission for Women-NCW is demanding the arrest of a man who made lewd comment on late Captain Anshuman Singh’s wife Smriti Singh while she received the Kirti Chakra award on his behalf. Delhi Police has registered An FIR in the matter.
The Delhi High Court issued a notice on 10th May, to the deceased sanitation worker’s wife in response to the Delhi Government’s appeal challenging the order for enhanced compensation. The court instructed the government to pay Rs 30 lakh within six weeks, as sought by the woman in accordance with Supreme Court directives on manual scavenging victim compensation. The case is scheduled for the next hearing in October.
