NEW DELHI: On Friday(31st Jan), the Supreme Court decided not to entertain a petition that challenged the senior designation of 70 advocates by the Delhi High Court. This petition was filed by Advocate Sanjay Dubey, who had applied for the senior designation but was not granted it by the Delhi High Court.
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has announced vacancies for 5 Judicial Members and 4 Administrative Members at the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). Applications are due by 15 January 2025, with eligibility details available on DoPT and CAT websites. Submissions can be via Speed Post or in person to the CR Section.
The Supreme Court highlighted the critical vacancies in the Central Information Commission and state information commissions, warning that delays in appointments jeopardize the effectiveness of the RTI Act. Justices directed timely actions from the Centre and states, demanding that vacant posts be filled, and emphasized transparency in the appointment process to uphold citizens’ right to information and democratic principles.
The Supreme Court Today (June 6th) lamented that courts are often squarely blamed for delays in case disposal, even though it’s sometimes the lawyers and litigants who contribute to such delays. “We are sitting (even) in vacation but nobody is here to argue,” the Court remarked after a lawyer sought the adjournment of a case.
Today (15th May): The Uttarakhand Government faced criticism from the Supreme Court for its ineffective response to forest fires. The court summoned the Chief Secretary to appear and highlighted the serious consequences of the lack of action. The government claimed that only 0.1% of wildlife areas were affected, but the court emphasized the need for immediate and proactive measures.
