NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India, in a hearing held on Wednesday(12th Feb), criticized the practice of announcing freebies before elections, stating that it was affecting people’s willingness to work. The Court observed that due to receiving free rations and money, many people were not motivated to work.
The Supreme Court directed state governments to submit affidavits detailing winter shelter plans for homeless individuals, emphasizing the urgency due to the approaching winter. Justices B.R. Gavai and K.V. Viswanathan invited the Attorney General for assistance and recommended corporate social responsibility initiatives to improve available resources for shelters.
The Bar Council of India (BCI) Today (Oct 15) issued new guidelines recommending a minimum stipend for junior advocates assisting senior advocates, law firms and independent practitioners. It also noted that senior advocates and firms in smaller towns or less lucrative fields may not have the financial resources to provide substantial stipends. Therefore, while the guidelines are encouraged, they are not enforced as mandatory across the profession.
The Bombay High Court emphasized the need to impose heavy costs on individuals wasting the time of investigative agencies and courts. The court’s observation came during a bail plea hearing for a man accused of rape, where the accused and victim had resolved their differences. The court expressed concern over unnecessary FIR registrations and court time wastage.
