A Delhi court today (28th Oct) has postponed its ruling on Engineer Rashid’s regular bail application in a terror funding case, now set for November 19. Rashid, a Lok Sabha MP, was granted interim bail in September to campaign for elections but has since surrendered to Tihar Jail as this bail expired. His defense claims he faces political persecution.
Umar Khalid, a former JNU student and activist, has spent four years in jail awaiting the framing of charges under the UAPA in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots. Despite being acquitted in one case, he remains detained due to a second case invoking anti-terror laws. Legal proceedings have been slow, raising concerns about justice in UAPA cases.
Engineer Rashid, the recent winner of the Baramulla seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, has applied for regular bail. The NIA strongly opposes his request as he is currently detained in connection with a 2017 terror funding case in Jammu and Kashmir. The court is expected to announce its verdict on September 4.
Today, On 6th August, The Supreme Court dismissed Sameer Kulkarni’s petition challenging the trial proceedings for the 2008 Malegaon Bomb Blast Case, stating no interference was warranted. Kulkarni sought to question the legal grounds of the sanction under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The trial lacked a valid sanction and the case was ultimately dismissed.
The Supreme Court today has granted bail to former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik on medical grounds in a money laundering case, valid until his regular bail plea is disposed of by the Bombay High Court. The Enforcement Directorate did not oppose the bail, and Malik, suffering from various ailments, can now seek medical attention while legal proceedings continue.

Today(on 11th July), Delhi High Court Judge Amit Sharma recused himself from the NIA plea for death penalty against Yasin Malik. The case moved to Justice Prathiba M Singh’s bench due to roster changes, with a new hearing set for August 9. Yasin Malik, a separatist leader serving a life sentence, participated virtually from Tihar Jail.
Today( on 1st July),The National Investigation Agency (NIA) approved jailed Kashmiri leader Engineer Rashid’s request to take his oath as an MP on July 25, with a court decision on his interim bail plea expected on Tuesday. Rashid, arrested in a 2017 terror funding case, seeks bail or custody parole to fulfill his parliamentary duties.
