Union Minister Annapurna Devi launched the “Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat Campaign” on November 27 to eliminate child marriages in India. The initiative focuses on empowering girls, enforcing legal reforms to set 18 as the minimum marriage age, and targeting high-burden states. The aim is to cut child marriage prevalence below 5% by 2029.
The Centre allocated 123 fast-track courts in West Bengal to expedite rape and child abuse cases. Mamata Banerjee urged for stricter anti-rape laws and fast-track courts. The Union Minister for Women and Child Development highlighted the implementation of legal provisions and criticized the state government for not utilizing available resources for women’s safety.
