NEW DELHI: On Monday(30th Sept), the Supreme Court stayed the proceedings in a criminal defamation case against Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, which was initiated due to comments regarding the purported removal of voters’ names from the electoral rolls in the national capital.
Today, On 27th September, Jagtar Singh Hawara, convicted in the assassination of Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, has petitioned the Supreme Court to transfer him from Tihar Jail to a Punjab prison for personal reasons. His request, currently under consideration, raises issues about prison conditions and inmate rights, highlighting his clean record since 2005.
The Supreme Court, led by Justice Abhay Oka, plans to review the e-prisons portal’s functionality on October 3, addressing its practical value for bail processes. The court emphasized the need to understand the data it provides to expedite bail formalities and ensure individuals are promptly produced before the trial court. Further discussions are scheduled for November 5.
The Karnataka High Court criticized BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal for his “half-Pakistani” remark about Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao due to his Muslim wife. Justice M. Nagaprasanna condemned such statements that label an entire community and emphasized the need for restraint while reviewing Yatnal’s petition against a defamation case.
Today, On 9th September, Shashi Tharoor challenged a trial court’s summons in a defamation case related to his remark comparing PM Narendra Modi to a scorpion. The Supreme Court, led by CJI DY Chandrachud, assured Tharoor’s counsel that the plea for an urgent hearing would be considered. BJP leader Rajiv Babbar filed the defamation case, claiming the remark hurt Hindu sentiments.
Today, On 9th September, the Karnataka High Court, under Justice M. Nagaprasanna, ordered an in-camera hearing for the bail plea of former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna in a rape and sexual assault case, to protect the victim’s dignity. The Court also instructed the SIT to submit the chargesheet. The next hearing is scheduled for September 12.

Today(on 2nd September), The Supreme Court granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s aide, Bibhav Kumar, who was arrested for allegedly assaulting AAP MP Swati Maliwal. Justice Bhuyan noted that Kumar had spent 100 days in judicial custody, and the chargesheet had already been filed.
The Supreme Court condemned a bank’s recovery agent firm as a “group of goons” for not returning a vehicle seized from a man despite a one-time loan settlement. The court ordered the West Bengal Police to file a charge sheet against the company within two months and directed compensation be paid to the man. The recovery agent eventually returned the damaged vehicle.
