‘33% Women Quota in Local Polls’| SC Praises Nagaland, Closes Contempt Case

Today, On 23rd July, The Supreme Court praised Nagaland for holding local body elections with a 33% women’s quota and closed the contempt case against the state government. Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan commended the participation and success of women candidates. The Court had previously mandated the reservation of one-third of the seats for women in these elections.

[Mon Killings Case] SC Issues Notice to Defence Ministry on Nagaland’s Plea to Prosecute 30 Army Personnel

Yesterday, On 16th July, The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, issued a notice to the Defence Ministry in response to Nagaland’s plea to prosecute 30 Army personnel involved in the Mon killings. This comes after the Central government denied prosecution sanction under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act. The incident, which sparked public outcry, occurred during a flawed military operation in December 2021.
