Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on sunday (4th Aug) announced plans to introduce a law imposing life imprisonment for ‘love jihad’ cases and a new domicile policy allowing only state-born individuals to be eligible for government jobs. Additional measures include stricter regulations on land sales between religious communities and efforts to protect tribal lands. These announcements follow discussions during the elections.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court has adjourned hearings on petitions contesting the OBC quota hike, in light of the Supreme Court’s interim stay on these proceedings. The Supreme Court is currently adjudicating nine petitions requesting the transfer of all related cases from the MP High Court. Consequently, the high court hearings have been deferred.
On Friday(31st May),The Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled the Haryana government’s socioeconomic criteria for awarding extra marks in state jobs as unconstitutional. The decision follows petitions, including one led by Aprit Gahlawat, questioning the fairness and legality of the criteria.
