“Sorry State of Affairs”: Supreme Court Slams MCD Over Poor Waste Management

Today(on 26th July), the Supreme Court criticized the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for its failure to enforce Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, deeming Delhi’s waste situation a severe problem. The court directed the Union environment ministry to arrange a meeting with MCD and Delhi government officials to address the crisis. The issue will be further reviewed on September 6.

On Tuesday,(9th July), The Supreme Court of India, under Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, raised concerns over municipal bodies charging user fees for sanitary waste collection alongside solid waste. They stressed the importance of segregating waste types, suggesting that fees should apply only to solid waste, not sanitary waste.
