Locals accused him and his associates of land seizure and mistreatment of women. The CBI also issued notices to individuals associated with him regarding an attack on the Enforcement Directorate. The Calcutta High Court instructed the state to aid in the investigation.
NEW DELHI: Today (April 29): The Supreme Court postponed the hearing of the State of West Bengal’s Special Leave Petition (SLP), which challenges the High Court’s order for a CBI investigation into alleged sexual assault, violence, and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali. The adjournment was granted at the request of the state’s counsel, with the court instructing that the petition’s pendency should not be exploited to prolong proceedings in the Calcutta High Court.
The Calcutta High Court on Thursday (4th April) condemned the violence in Sandeshkhali as “extremely shameful,” and held the Trinamool Congress-led government responsible for citizen safety amid allegations of extortion, land grab, and sexual assault. The court emphasized the government’s moral responsibility and discussed the need for a comprehensive inquiry, possibly by the CBI, to address systemic deficiencies.
