Today, On 11th December, The Supreme Court rejected former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s plea to suspend his 20-year sentence in the 1996 drug seizure case. Justices JK Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi refused to consider his appeal, denying him relief.
The Supreme Court has today issued a notice to the Gujarat Government regarding former police officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s appeal against his conviction and life sentence in a 1990 custodial death case. Bhatt, along with other officers, was found guilty of custodial torture following communal riots. The case will be heard alongside related appeals.
On 27th March: Former Indian Police Service (IPS) Officer Sanjiv Bhatt has been convicted by a Gujarat court in a 28-year-old drug planting case dating back to 1996. The case involved accusations of framing a Rajasthan-based lawyer, and Bhatt’s plea challenging trial completion time was dismissed by the Supreme Court. Previously, he had also been convicted in a custodial death case from 1990.
