A Sealdah court in Kolkata will announce its judgment today (Jan 18) in the shocking rape and murder case of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in August last year. The CBI, after taking over from Kolkata Police, has sought maximum punishment for Sanjay Roy, the sole accused. The victim’s family, however, remains dissatisfied with the investigation, questioning if others were also involved in the crime that sparked nationwide outrage.
Yesterday, On 12th November, two witnesses testified in the RG Kar case involving the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor, marking progress in the ongoing trial. The investigation has prompted widespread protests among junior doctors demanding accountability and stricter safety regulations in medical institutions. The case has been transferred to the CBI for further inquiry.
The Supreme Court Today (Sept 17) will hear matters linked to the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Between the last hearing and this one, a big development is the CBI slapping evidence tampering charge on Dr Sandip Ghosh and police officer Abhijit Mondal. WB CM announced that most of the doctors’ demands were met. Kolkata Police Chief Vineet Goyal will resign, and Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Gupta will be removed, along with two senior health officials.
CJI Chandrachud Today (Sept 6) dismissed the plea of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, challenging a Calcutta High Court order. Ghosh had sought to intervene in a public interest litigation (PIL) that alleges financial irregularities at the college during his tenure. The CJI ruled that, as an accused individual, Ghosh does not have the legal standing to join the PIL, particularly because the High Court is already supervising the investigation into the allegations.
