The Supreme Court Yesterday (April 30th) reserved its judgment on the plea by Prabir Purkayastha, the editor-in-chief of online news portal NewsClick, who has challenged his arrest and remand by the Delhi Police in connection with a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Today(on 16th April), Delhi Police confirmed acquiring necessary sanctions under UAPA and CrPC for the NewsClick Case prosecution. The Special Public Prosecutor presented three sanction orders as part of a supplementary chargesheet. The case was postponed until April 30, 2024, with emphasis on thorough examination of the 8,000-page chargesheet. Newsclick and its founder are accused of promoting pro-China propaganda.
Today (15th April): The Supreme Court has postponed NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha’s medical bail plea until April 22. Purkayastha is held in Tihar jail under anti-terror laws. The court instructed AIIMS to assess his health condition. He was arrested on allegations of receiving Chinese funding for anti-national propaganda. Delhi High Court previously denied his UAPA arrest challenge.
Today(on 20th March), The Patiala House Court in Delhi has extended the NewsClick case investigation by 10 days over allegations of pro-China propaganda and illegal foreign funding. This marks the third extension granted by Additional Sessions Judge Hardeep Kaur. The accused individuals’ judicial custody has also been prolonged, with significant amounts of foreign funds alleged to have been illegally injected into India.
Today (February 27th), the Supreme Court issued a directive for AIIMS to establish a medical board tasked with assessing the health status of Prabir Purkayastha, the founder of NewsClick. Purkayastha is presently held in Tihar Jail in connection with a case filed against him under the anti-terror legislation, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
