The Supreme Court strongly criticised the Bihar Cricket Association, calling its disputes “dirty politics” and a “waste of public revenue,” while appointing former Supreme Court judge L. Nageswara Rao as the new Ombudsman to ensure smooth functioning.
Former Supreme Court Justice Arun Mishra has been appointed as the Ombudsman and Ethics Officer of the BCCI. Additionally, Prabhtej Singh Bhatia is the new Treasurer. The BCCI announced the Indian squad for a T20I series against England, starting January 22, featuring Mohammed Shami among others.
The Lokpal has dismissed a corruption complaint against former Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, citing lack of jurisdiction. The anti-corruption Inspector clarified that sitting judges and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court do not fall within its purview under Section 14 of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act. This provision restricts the Lokpal’s authority to probe complaints against such high-ranking judicial officials.
The Supreme Court today dismissed the PIL alleging ECI’s EVM misuse, deeming the allegations vague and an abuse of legal process. The Bench advised filing election petitions with the High Court for election-related concerns, criticizing the lack of evidence in the petition. The plea for a high-powered committee to investigate ECI’s actions was also rejected.
