Today(on 3rd May), the Supreme Court rejected a petition addressing the issue of namesake candidates in elections, emphasizing fairness in electoral processes. The Court highlighted that individuals should not be disqualified based on name similarities and suggested that the responsibility to address this issue now rests with the legislature. The petitioner withdrew the plea following the Court’s remarks.
The Supreme Court is set to deliberate on the controversial practice of sponsoring namesake candidates in elections, following a PIL filed by Sabu Steephen. The petitioner argues that such candidates, aimed at diverting votes from genuine contenders, undermine the electoral process. It calls for the Election Commission to establish measures to eliminate this fraudulent tactic.
