Today, On 13th October , The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre and Tamil Nadu on a plea by a Kerala NGO seeking the decommissioning of the Mullaperiyar Dam, described as “one of the oldest in existence,” and the construction of a new dam.
The Supreme Court Today (Feb 19) criticized the fear-mongering over Tamil Nadu’s actions on the Mullaperiyar dam and ordered a supervisory committee to resolve disputes between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
The Supreme Court is considering a safety audit for the 130-year-old Mullaperiyar dam due to ongoing safety concerns. The court criticized the Central government for not forming the National Committee on Dam Safety as required by the 2021 Act. Kerala argues the dam is unsafe, while Tamil Nadu relies on it for water. The case will continue on January 22.
Tamil Nadu has accused Kerala in the Supreme Court of “crying foul” about the safety of the over 125-year-old Mullaperiyar dam while at the same time “wilfully obstructing” work essential to maintain the structure.
Today,22nd April, Tamil Nadu rejected Survey of India’s findings in the Mullaperiyar Dam Case, leading to a July 10 deadline. The Supreme Court demanded detailed affidavits from both sides. The conflict involves land disputes near the dam and Kerala’s parking project. Justices Oka and Bhuyan will finalize the legal issues by mid-July. Tamil Nadu disputed the survey report’s accuracy, demanding its dismissal.
