A new survey by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) shows that 38.5% of women lawyers find the legal profession discouraging, revealing serious challenges linked to gender bias, limited leadership opportunities, and the pressures of marriage and motherhood affecting careers.
During last week’s Supreme Court summer vacation bench, Justice Sanjay Karol encouraged junior lawyers. He said, “Junior lawyers shouldn’t get stuck, overawed, frightened of SC judges, those arguing are doing well,” praising their efforts.
Bengaluru: Former Supreme Court judge, Justice Indira Banerjee, emphasized the urgent need for a complete shift in mindset to enable more women to rise to higher positions in the judiciary. She shared her insights during a fireside chat on Saturday with Jayna Kothari, Executive Director of the Centre for Law and Policy Research (CLPR).
Justice Hima Kohli, at a commemorative event for “100 Years of Women in Law in India,” highlighted the lack of female Attorney General and Solicitor General appointments in 75 years, emphasizing ongoing gender bias. She identified barriers like work-life balance issues, stereotypes, and limited opportunities, calling for reforms to empower women in the legal field.
The Supreme Court of India held a full court session to honor Senior Advocates M C Bhandare and Vimlesh Kumar Shukla, who recently passed away. Both distinguished legal personalities made significant contributions to the field, with Bhandare serving as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament and Governor of Odisha, and Shukla excelling in constitutional law and commercial litigation. The legal community paid their respects, praising their legacy and commitment to justice. This event served as a tribute to their esteemed reputation and ongoing influence in the legal profession.
On wednesday (6th of March): The Kerala High Court emphasized that being appointed as an advocate commissioner is an honor, not simply a commercial endeavor. The court criticized a young lawyer’s misconception that the role was purely for monetary gain. It stressed the need for the bar and the bench to guide and nurture young legal professionals for the integrity of the legal system.
